Consensus: A more practical and road-friendly version of the Bronco, the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport offers decent driving manners, respectable off-road capability, and good standard features. It’s a bit expensive for the class, though, and rear seating is fairly tight.

CR-V vs. Bronco Sport: Pavement or Dirt

Honda CR-V

Among compact crossovers, the 2022 Honda CR-V continues to impress, with lively driving manners, good standard safety features, and loads of space for cargo and passengers. A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is spunky and provides plenty of pep. The CR-V drives pleasantly and is competent if not exactly sporty.

Also available is a 212-hp hybrid returning 40 mpg in the city. Front-wheel drive is the default, with all-wheel drive available for 4-season conditions, although the CR-V has no real off-roading ability.

The exterior look is modern and sleek, although it doesn’t exactly stand out. Inside, the CR-V is roomier than one might expect, with plenty of space for passengers and 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats folded. The seating position is good, the seats are comfortable, and outward visibility is very good.

Standard features include the Honda Sensing suite of driver aids including automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, and lane-keeping assist. Also standard are a 4-speaker audio system, a USB port, and Bluetooth, although there isn’t even a touchscreen on the base LX trim.

Our money is with the next up EX trim, which adds a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a moonroof, blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 6-speaker audio system. The EX-L adds leather seats and more speakers.

The top Touring trim adds larger wheels, wireless charging, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and a 9-speaker audio system.

Ford Bronco Sport

While the Bronco is sold with two doors or four, the smaller 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is a 4-door only. This is partly because it’s intended as a more city-friendly all-arounder rather than its rugged off-road-focused brother.

Make no mistake, however, as the Bronco Sport is still a pretty decent off-roader in its own right, with standard all-wheel drive and a terrain management system that can be adjusted to fit whatever you’re driving through. On pavement, however, the ride is civilized and comfortable. The base turbocharged 3-cylinder engine provides enough oomph to get it around, and there’s also a 250-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo I4 if you want more muscle.

The cabin goes for a rugged yet comfortable look, and while it has a fair amount of hard plastic, the intention is to make it easier to clean. A tall roof makes for good headroom front and back, but rear-seat legroom can be pretty tight. There’s also a decent amount of cargo space, particularly when you consider that the Bronco Sport is a compact crossover.

Standard features are pretty basic. They include an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and USB-A and USB-C ports. Standard safety features come via the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite that includes blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, a lane-keeping system, automatic emergency braking, and a back-up camera.

Higher trims add some more comfort features, the availability of more options, and such things as sport leather seats, remote start, and LED lighting. The Badlands trim goes big on the off-roading, with a more advanced all-wheel-drive system, an off-road suspension, skid plates, tow hooks, a front 180-degree camera, and Trail Control.

Which One Is Right for Me?

There is much to love about the 2022 Honda CR-V, which continues to be one of the best compact SUVs available. It’s practical, fuel-efficient, reliable, and has plenty of space for both cargo and passengers. If you keep to the city, it’s a great choice.

But if your weekends find you heading up to the mountains or into the woods, the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is the way to go here. It’s more rugged, particularly in Badlands trim, and can take you past the end of the pavement.
