All-News4Jax football: Sandalwood’s Canady proves that he picked the right sport - WJXT News4JAX

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jadon Canady was surprised at first.

Then, they just kept right on coming at him.

One. Two. …

“After like three of four picks, I thought teams would go away from me,” said Canady, the All-News4Jax football player of the year.

Three. Four. Five. …

“But they just kept throwing the ball my way, so. I don’t know why they did it.”

Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. …

The Sandalwood athlete had 10 interceptions in 11 games, a total that tied for third in the nation, according to MaxPreps. That wasn’t all. Canady proved the most versatile player on the First Coast. He had 14 catches for 288 yards and eight touchdowns.

If Canady (6-1, 170 pounds) was catching a pass, it was more likely ending with him standing in the end zone. He also took two punt returns back for touchdowns. Outside of Canady’s touch-to-touchdown ratio, it was his defensive emergence that put him on the map.

His career interceptions at the varsity level before 2020 when he was playing at Fletcher: Zero.

In fact, Canady was far more accomplished in track and field than he ever was in football. He was an excellent hurdler in track and field, taking fourth at the state meet in 2019. And he came from a naturally athletic family.

One of his brothers, Braxton, was a state champion hurdler at Paxon and went on to a successful college career at Oregon and then Florida State. Another brother, Bryce, played football at Florida International and was briefly signed by the Jaguars in the 2018 preseason. He later played in the short-lived AAF.

“They taught me the basics of hurdling, the basics of football,” Canady said.

For Canady, though, football was first and track only something to do to stay active and in shape. During the extended break away from the game due to the pandemic, Canady said that the onus to work out and stay focused was a put more on players than ever before. He said that staying focused during time away from campus was challenging, but it wound up serving as something of a litmus test for college. A long summer bled right into the fall and Sandalwood wound up having its best season in years.

The scheme change from Fletcher to Sandalwood allowed Canady to play closer to receivers. That shift, he said, allowed him to see a far greater number of passes thrown in his direction. The results were exceptional. The Saints finished 8-3 and went three rounds deep into the postseason and Canady wound up signing with Tulane during the early period last month.

“It definitely showed me how much you have to stay in shape, lift, eat right, stuff like that,” he said. “I worked out almost every day, used it kind of as an advantage.”
