High school field hockey, volleyball & soccer modifications adjusted for Fall Sports II season - masslive.com

High school field hockey, volleyball and soccer teams that did not get the opportunity to play during the traditional fall season will have the chance to play during Fall Sports II after modifications were unanimously passed by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Friday.

Every sport put before the Board of Directors was unanimously approved for play, including football, during a season that will run from Feb. 22 to April 25.

Field hockey, volleyball and soccer were specifically singled out at the start Friday’s meeting as having minor changes to the modifications from the Fall Sports I season. Several sports committees, including golf, swimming and cross country, did not put forth modification changes for the additional season.

While still following modifications that follow Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Office (EEA), field hockey, volleyball and soccer will make the below changes for the Fall Sports II season:

  • Field hockey will be allowed penalty corners.
  • Soccer will move back to halves instead of quarters.
  • Volleyball no longer needs the three-foot line that was put on each side of the net.
  • Volleyball no longer needs the ball washed between every point. Protocol now dictates it is washed between sets.
  • Volleyball can have up to 15 athletes on its game-day roster.

The MIAA will begin the process of approving spring sports in March. Sport committees will present their modifications to the sports medicine committee on March 8, kicking off a timeline that ends with a suggested Board of Directors vote on March 12.
