State high school officials, citing guidelines from the California Department of Public Health and the governor’s office, have reinstated bylaws that prohibit athletes from playing on a high school team and a club team simultaneously.
In a memo Wednesday, the California Interscholastic Federation said it has rescinded a temporary suspension of CIF Bylaws 600-605 (outside competition) because state guidelines released last month say that athletes and coaches should “refrain from participating with more than one team over the same season or time period.”
The CIF said anyone who has already participated in non-high school competition isn’t subject to ineligibility because “as of today, there have been no CIF contests.”
The reinstatement of the bylaws are effective immediately, the CIF stated.
When the CIF postponed fall sports last summer, it temporarily suspended the bylaws because it was moving its sports into non-traditional seasons.
The CIF also announced Wednesday that it has extended the application period for student-athletes to file for a financial hardship transfer because of the COVID-19 pandemic through the end of the 2020-21 school year.
