Saturday Olympic Sport Roundup - House of Sparky

In this piece you’ll find results on Saturday’s events from Arizona State women’s tennis, wrestling and gymnastics.

Women’s Tennis

The Sun Devils arrived in Austin, Texas for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. No. 20 Arizona State (1-1) took on No. 23 Baylor (4-0) in its opening match and fell to the Bears 4-2 on Saturday.

Arizona State won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Giulia Morlet and Tereza Kolarova won their sets with the most ease in a 6-2 victory.

Meanwhile, Marianna Argyrokastriti and Sammi Hampton went the disctance in a back-and-forth affair that the Sun Devils ultimately took.

Morlet was the only Sun Devil to win a singles match against Baylor. Lauryn John-Baptiste was up 5-0 in her final set against her opponent but Baylor had clinched the game before the match was finished.

The team will finish out the weekend on Sunday against Iowa at 11:00 a.m. MT.

Wrestling

The Sun Devils went up to Orem, Utah in an event with Utah Valley and Wyoming. Due to COVID-19 protocols, only true freshmen Cohlton Schultz and Julian Chlebove competed.

Schultz won the heavyweight class tournament at the Utah Valley Round Robin Tournament. He was able to win three matches that included a victory over No. 1 heavyweight wrestler in the Big 12, Wyoming senior Brian Andrews.

Chlebove wasn’t as successful at the 141-pound class. He won one of his three matches as he earned a victory over Wyoming’s Darren Green.

Arizona State’s next match is slated for Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. MST at Oregon State.

Gymnastics

In a top-15 match in Los Angeles, No. 7 UCLA (1-0) scrapped by No. 15 Arizona State (1-2) 196.150-195.950 on Saturday.

Hannah Scharf once again had a great performance for the Sun Devils. She took home the all-around title for the second straight meet with her 39.475 score. Scharf also finished second in vault and bars.

The teams split the events, with Arizona State the winners of bars and beam, and UCLA taking vault and floor.

Arizona State had a late lead, but UCLA’s Nia Dennis clinched the win for her team with a 9.950 — the highest score for any individual event at the meet — on the floor and the last set between the two teams.

The young Sun Devils have competed with two top-eight teams thus far this season. Arizona State will face Oregon State at home on Jan. 29 at 5:00 p.m. MT.
