State legislators push for return of high-risk sports in NY - WBNG-TV

(WBNG) -- An effort is in place by state legislators to reinstate high-risk sports across New York.

State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt introduced legislation Thursday to bring back all interscholastic sport competition to New York. Currently, only low and moderate risk sports were given the green light.

Schmitt sent the following letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo's office:

The original date for high-risk sports to return was slated for January 4, 2021. With no approval from state officials, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association postponed the start date until further notice.

Sports classified as high-risk include basketball, boys lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football, ice hockey, volleyball and wrestling.

Since the introduction of the bill, a number of assembly members have backed it.

State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo provided 12 News with the following statement:

“Interscholastic sports are a source of community pride; student-athletes and their coaches have worked hard for the opportunity to compete against their peers. I would love to see school sports resume as soon as possible, so long as they can be played safely. The state needs to issue guidance for ALL sports so that our school districts will be ready as soon as they receive the go-ahead. Schools will also need resources in order to keep gyms, stadiums, and playing fields safe for athletes, coaches, officials, and potential fans.”

The New York State Athletic Administrators Association also sent a letter to Governor Cuomo's office, which can be found below.
