Hewitt-Trussville 2-sport star Riley Quick picks baseball, commits to Alabama - AL.com

Riley Quick has decided to follow older brother Pierce to Alabama.

But not to play football.

Quick, a rising senior 2-sport star for Hewitt-Trussville, committed to the Crimson Tide to play baseball on Monday.

He told AL.com he will play football his senior year for the Huskies before giving it up in college to concentrate on baseball.

“I really love football more than anything, but I also love baseball,” he said. “I don’t really want to play college football, just baseball.”

Quick said, when he took everything into consideration, his choice was obvious.

“Obviously, Pierce is there,” he said. “It’s just home. I’ve grown up there. I’ve always been an Alabama fan. Everything about Alabama – I just love it.”

Pierce Quick signed with Alabama during the 2019 recruiting cycle and is now a sophomore offensive lineman for the Crimson Tide.

Riley Quick, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound lineman, could have picked either or both sports in college. He’s currently the No. 8 senior football prospect in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings. He’s also the reigning Class 7A Pitcher of the Year and AL.com Co-Birmingham Baseball Player of the Year.

Quick had a breakout junior season in baseball for coach Jeff Mauldin’s Huskies. He went 9-2 with a pair of saves and a 0.99 ERA. He averaged 11.5 strikeouts every seven innings.

“He pitched our biggest games and every time he took the ball, we felt like we were going to win that day,” Mauldin said for AL.com last month. “When he was on the mound, he was just a calming influence over the team and coaches and everyone involved.”

The positions Quick plays in both sports -- offensive/defensive line in football and pitcher in baseball -- likely would have made it difficult for him to play both on the next level.

“One of his biggest challenges moving forward I think will be the weight issue,” Hewitt football coach Josh Floyd said earlier this spring. “That’s the question from college coaches (about his potential to play both sports). Riley could be 280-290 pounds pretty easily. They can put that on quickly in college. Can he do that and then pitch in baseball? That is what makes it a unique situation. If you are an SEC offensive lineman, you aren’t going to be able to play at 240 of 250 pounds. They are going to want him closer to 300 pounds.”

Mauldin believes Quick also will have a chance to be selected in next summer’s MLB Draft.
