Three Providence College Student-Athletes Honored As 2020-21 Sport Excellence Award Winners - Providence College Athletics

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference has announced the winners of the 2020-21 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards today [July 22], which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. Three Providence College student-athletes were among the 22 award winners and included Maddie Babineau (field hockey), Marcelo Rocha (men's cross country) and Abbey Wheeler (women's outdoor track & field).
 
The Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
 
Babineau started all 66 games in the midfield for Providence during her career and recorded 27 points on six goals and 15 assists. She also helped guide the Friars to three BIG EAST Tournament appearances in her four seasons. Babineau also excelled in the classroom having been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. In a shortened 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Babineau started all nine of the Friars' games and recorded one assist in a match against conference foe Quinnipiac (March 5). In her final season with the Friars she earned numerous honors, including Preseason All-BIG EAST, All-BIG EAST First Team, NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First Team and NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star. 
 
Rocha earned All-BIG EAST honors during the 2020-21 cross country season and qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter for outdoor track. At the NCAA Championships, Rocha finished 18th in a time of 28:37.05, a personal best and third fastest time in school history. Rocha set facility records this past Spring with a first-place finish at the 2021 Ocean State Invitational on Ray Treacy Track in the 5,000-meter in a time of 13:55.98, breaking the previous facility record by over 10 seconds. Rocha broke his record again at the BIG EAST Championship, where he achieved a lifetime best in the 5,000-meters (13:49.79).
 
Wheeler took home four All-America honors over her five years at Providence College. Most recently, Wheeler claimed Second-Team All-America recognition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000-meters with a personal-best time of 33:04.56. Wheeler also earned First-Team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter, placing fifth in a time of 15:51.87 on March 10. 
The Elmira, New York native was named Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer at the BIG Championships in the 2019-20 season and was named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. Additionally, she was a three-time BIG EAST champion and four-time All-BIG EAST performer.
