2021 Range Rover Sport PHEV vs. 2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Comparison - Kelley Blue Book

The 2021 Range Rover Sport P400e is all about luxury in a hybrid SUV, while the 2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid plays the performance card. Here’s how they compare.

2021 Range Rover Sport P400e

Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV

2021 Range Rover Sport P400e Starting Price: $84,350 | Price yours or View listings near you

Above Average: Off-road capability; luxurious interior.

Below Average: Not the highest mileage given the output.

Consensus: The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a luxury midsize SUV. It’s one step down (both in size and price) from the flagship Range Rover, but still has a lot of that vehicle’s authoritative presence, gorgeous interior, impeccable road manners, and serious off-road ability — and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain in P400e trim.

2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid

2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Starting Price: $87,800 | Price yours or View listings near you.

Above Average: Excellent performance; luxurious cabin.

Below Average: It’s even pricier than the Range Rover Sport P400e — and that’s before options.

Consensus: The 2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is a luxury midsize SUV with a strong mix of premium amenities, on-road performance, and off-road capability. It’s not as world-topping as the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, but it’s no slouch, either, at just 4.7 seconds to 60 mph.

Range Rover Sport P400e vs. Cayenne E-Hybrid: Civilized Contest

Range Rover Sport P400e

The Range Rover Sport is a dynamic luxury SUV with excellent off-road capabilities. The plug-in hybrid version of the Range Rover Sport has the same range and MPGe rating as the more expensive Range Rover PHEV.

Around town, the Sport impresses with its sophistication, responsive drivetrains, and deeply comfortable interior. Freeway speeds are handled with complete stability and calm.

Yet for all its uptown qualities, the Range Rover Sport can still get down and dirty. All-wheel-drive hardware and terrain response systems don’t just pull the Range Rover Sport through deep bogs and back-road ruts — they allow the vehicle to conquer them. And wade through water deep enough to reach the door handles.

The P400e plug-in hybrid drivetrain uses a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. It can be had with either the HSE Silver or Autobiography specification. The maximum range on battery power alone is 19 miles.

All 2021 Range Rover Sports have an 8-speed automatic transmission and a permanent 4-wheel-drive system.

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

Porsche’s Cayenne for 2021 may be an SUV, but its lower center-of-gravity engine and lightweight aluminum construction make it ride and handle like a lithe sports car. Acceleration and passing power are never in short supply.

The E-Hybrid combines a 3.0-liter turbo V6 with a 134-horsepower electric motor for a combined output of 455 horsepower. It can run solely on electric power for a distance of 27 miles at speeds up to 85 mph.

Looking like a 12.3-inch slab of polished black onyx until you start the vehicle, Cayenne’s massive touchscreen infotainment system is one of our favorite in-cabin features. It’s controlled by either large block icons or haptic-feedback buttons surrounding the center console shifter. The display serves as the focal point for navigation, camera feeds, apps, and smartphone integration.

The Cayenne’s interior is richly appointed. The seats are amazingly supportive, handsomely designed, and available with heating, cooling, and up to 18 different power adjustments.

All Cayenne models use an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. Although not as fast as the PDK dual-clutch transmission used on other Porsche vehicles, this one seems to work well in the Cayenne. It answers the call of both performance and luxury. All Cayenne models come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD).

2021 Range Rover Sport P400e Advantages

Which One is Right for Me?

The 2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is an athletic luxury SUV with seating for five and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that’s both efficient and sporty — and it retains the Cayenne’s strong off-road ability, too.
