Four-star, two-sport athlete Tre Donaldson commits to Auburn for football, basketball - AL.com

Bruce Pearl shared Auburn’s practice court with Bryan Harsin and the football team earlier this week, as Harsin’s squad took to the basketball court to unwind during a scheduled day off from practice.

Pearl later tweeted that he would give Harsin’s players “a shot on the hardwood” after football season, which prompted an amusing response from Harsin on social media.

It may have been a sign of things to come, as Auburn on Thursday picked up a commitment from two-sport standout Tre Donaldson, a four-star safety and point guard prospect out of Tallahassee, Fla. Donaldson chose Auburn over a final group that included Florida State, Florida and Alabama.

Donaldson is expected to play both basketball and football at Auburn, which he discussed with both coaching staffs during an official visit to the Plains back in June.

“I’m just trying to bring (being a two-sport athlete) back,” Donaldson said.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder is rated as the No. 20 safety prospect in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, and the nation’s No. 267 overall player. He is considered the No. 133 overall basketball prospect this cycle and is rated as the No. 18 point guard in the class.

As a junior at Florida State University High School, Donaldson played both quarterback and defensive back while leading his team to a 9-1 mark. He totaled 42 tackles and a pair of interceptions while also passing for 1,765 yards, rushing for another 702 and totaling 25 touchdowns (15 passing, 10 rushing). On the hardwood, Donaldson averaged 11.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Donaldson is the 10th commit for Auburn in Harsin’s first full recruiting class, and the fourth blue-chip pickup, and he’s the third commitment for the Tigers at safety in the class, joining three-star commits Caleb Wooden and Ja’Kobi Albert. Donaldson’s commitment boosts Auburn’s class to No. 46 in the nation, up 10 spots from the start of the day. It also moves Auburn ahead of Ole Miss for 13th in SEC team rankings this cycle.

The addition of Donaldson is the first for Pearl’s in the 2022 recruiting class. The Tigers are now ranked 38th in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
