SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Student-athletes at Saratoga Springs High School returned to the fields on Monday August 23 for a full slate of fall sports. They braved the heat this week, in preparations for their first matches of the season, in the coming weeks.
Last school year, sports designated as “high-risk,” such as football and volleyball, were played in March as part of the Fall II season. This year, a much more traditional season is expected, with a normal preseason, regular length regular season and post-season, including sections and the state tournaments.
The options students could choose from are girls and boys cross country, football, girls and boys soccer, field hockey, girls and boys volleyball, girls tennis, girls swimming and diving, girls and boys golf and cheerleading.
With masks being mandated inside of schools, volleyball players be the ones most impacted by those regulations. NYSPHSAA decided earlier in the summer not to have any other requirements regarding mask-wearing for other sports, leaving it up to each individual district. According to Athletic Director Nicholas McPartland, as of right now there is no restriction on fan attendance for Saratoga games.
The first scheduled match of the 2021 fall season belongs to the boys and girls varsity golf team, when they take on Shaker this Friday at 9 a.m.
Football kicks off their 2021 campaign on September 10 on the road at Columbia High. Before football can come home and play on their new turf on September 24, Girl’s Tennis, Boy’s and Girl’s Soccer, Field Hockey, and Boy’s Volleyball will all get a chance to host home games at Saratoga High.
Girl’s soccer will play at home on September 7 against Queensbury, Field Hockey and Boy’s Volleyball will play the next day against Niskayuna and Shen, respectively, and Boy’s Soccer will host Schenectady on September 9. Girl’s Tennis will be the first team to get the chance to play at home on September 1 with Shen in town.
