Roanoke County now allowing high school sports practices, games among county teams - WSLS 10

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Roanoke County school leaders are letting some students get back to playing sports.

The decision comes following a 4-1 vote Tuesday afternoon during a Roanoke County School Board work session.

The board recognized that sports are important to a lot of families and are trying to make the best with what they’ve got.

The vote allows varsity sports to compete with other county schools and practice starting Wednesday.

This announcement comes as good news to the few dozen students and parents who were gathered at the division office earlier Tuesday.

They wanted school leadership to see that this is important to them.

“Being able to go to school and then go have sports right after is definitely something that I’ve grown up needing. Just because it gives everyone a sense of family and support and safety and not being able to do that has taken a toll on my life and others’ as well,” said Claire Lucas, a senior at Glenvar High School.

The students and their parents are not alone.

The #LetThemPlay movement has been gaining steam across the country and even at other area division.
