Cristiano Ronaldo transfer: Jorge Mendes rules out move from Juventus to Sporting this summer - The Athletic

What has been said?

“Cristiano is very proud of Sporting winning the championship, as he has demonstrated publicly, but at the moment, his career plans do not go through Portugal”, agent Jorge Mendes told Portuguese newspaper Record.

Why all the speculation?

Juventus’ poor form has contributed to the uncertainty over Ronaldo’s future.

There is a possibility that Juventus will play in the Europa League next season after a disastrous debut campaign for Pirlo, which would naturally result in a financial crunch for the club.

Ronaldo is one of the best-paid players in the world and so far, his transfer has not satisfied many Juventus ultras.

The veteran forward has also been a frequent target of the Italian press this season and was this week criticised for missing a Juventus training session to collect a new sports car.

Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, meanwhile said she will try to convince her son to return to his boyhood club Sporting this summer.

“I’ll talk to him [Cristiano] to bring him back,” she said from her balcony as she spoke to Sporting fans who had taken to the streets to celebrate the club’s title success. “Next year he will play in Alvalade [Sporting’s stadium].”

What has Ronaldo achieved at Juventus?

In just under three seasons at Juventus, Ronaldo has scored 100 goals and counting.

He has also won two Serie A titles and two Supercoppa Italianas.

In his debut season, he won Serie A MVP and has twice been voted Serie A Footballer of the Year and into the team of the season.

Why has this season been a struggle?

Despite previous success, this season has been a struggle for both Ronaldo and Juventus.

They still have yet to win the coveted Champions League, and were embarrassingly knocked out at the round of 16 stage to Porto in this season’s competition.

Appointing Andrea Pirlo as manager has not worked and Juventus are at risk of failing to even qualify for the Champions League next season as they have surrendered their Serie A title with barely a whimper to Inter Milan.

In spite of Ronaldo’s 28 league goals thus far, he has come under intense criticism for Juventus fans for not performing in big matches.
