Men’s Tennis

Freshman Max McKennon didn’t seem to care that Stanford was the top seed in the tournament. He just kept battling. Eventually, McKennon took court five after a 7-6 win in the final set, and Arizona State won 4-3 in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament.

Despite Stanford earning the doubles point, the Sun Devils battled back. Nathan Ponwith, Tim Ruehl and Christian Lerby all won in two sets to set the stage for McKennon to earn the biggest win of his career thus far.

The Sun Devils will face USC in the Pac-12 Championship on Monday at 3:00 p.m.

Women’s Tennis

Arizona State women’s tennis fell to UCLA in the Pac-12 Championship semifinals on Sunday. The top-seeded Bruins bested the Sun Devils 4-2.

UCLA earned the double points after two dominate outings on court one and three.

Arizona State lost court six in the first finished singles match. However, Lauryn John-Baptiste and Marianna Argyrokastriti won their individual matches in two sets to tie the contest up at two points apiece.

UCLA closed out the win on courts one and four.

The Sun Devils will find on their postseason fate on May 3 as part of the selection show for the NCAA women’s tennis bracket. That will start on May 16.

Women’s Golf

Arizona State women’s golf finished third at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday. The Sun Devils’ +8 was 11 shots behind the tournament’s winner, USC.

Linn Grant had the best score for the Sun Devils, finishing tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard. Amanda Linner had a tough round three after being near the top in the first two rounds. Nevertheless, she still finished in ninth place.

The seventh-ranked Sun Devils were the highest ranked team coming in the conference championship, but were not at full strength. Olivia Mehaffey, the 2019 Pac-12 individual champion, missed the tournament due to COVID health and safety protocols.

Arizona State will next play on May 10-12 for a NCAA regional. The location will be determined on April 28 on the selection show on GOLF Channel.

Lacrosse

Arizona State lacrosse (9-5) closed out its regular season the same way it started, with a win over San Diego State (5-8). Behind a high-scoring second half, the Sun Devils won 20-11.

Early in the second, the Aztecs scored three straight goals to tie the game at 11. The Sun Devils response? A 9-0 run to finish the game over the final 16:52.

Kerri Clayton and Carley Adams each scored five goals. Katie Brodsky added four as well.

Arizona State’s next game will be at the Pac-12 Championships starting on May 5 at Stanford.
