Parkers Chapel’s Kallie Martin won two state championships during the 2A State Track & Field Meet. Yet, the freshman was almost apologetic when discussing her performance.
“I was very tired at the last track meet. I wasn’t used to prelims and everything. It kind of messed up things but I did very well considering,” Martin said. “I did not do my very best in my running events because I was so tired.”
Martin finished sixth in the 200 and seventh in the 100 at the state meet. That was after she won the long jump with a leap of 17-1 and won the triple jump, soaring 34-6.50.
She was also a member of the Lady Trojans’ fourth place 4x200 relay and sixth place 4x100 relay.
The 4x200 consisted of all freshmen with Makenzie Morgan, Bella Frisby and Reaux McAuliffe joining Martin.
“I was very proud of our team,” she said. “It was a big accomplishment for us because of how young we are. I think we can do a lot better.”
Always striving to do better has been a key to Martin’s success. PC track coach Steven Bates added, she’s also just a heck of an athlete.
“To play as many sports as she does and to do it at a high level, she’s a warrior. She’s such a good athlete, a lot of times people forget she’s just a ninth grader,” said Bates. “Her best days are still in front of her and she’s already got two state championship rings in track and one in tennis. She’s probably one of the best just natural athletes I’ve ever coached - male or female.”
Martin won the high point award in leading the Lady Trojans to the district track championship. She also earned All-State honors in tennis after helping PC win the state title.
“I’ve accomplished a lot during my freshman year that I really didn’t think I was going to do. I was very proud that I did and I moved up in so many sports,” said Martin, also a basketball and softball standout.
Which sport was her best?
“I would say track because I really improved a lot in my running events and long jump and triple jump,” she said. “Also, I was really proud of myself in basketball. I was very nervous moving up and I thought I did pretty well with the senior high group.”
Martin said tennis was probably her favorite sport although she admitted the answer usually depended on the season. She was third in the state in 2A singles.
But track and field might be her most successful. At nearly 6-feet-tall, her long legs appear to be sculpted specifically for the long jump and triple jump. On the track, her galloping strides could be perfect for the 200.
It will take more work, which she is more than willing to do.
“I’ve been working on stretching to loosen up my muscles so I can get a better jump and run and get my stride longer,” she said. “I’ve been working on my technique and how far I jump. I have to have a certain length on every jump to fulfill my full lengths.”
Martin qualified for the Meet of Champions but didn’t compete because it conflicted with softball. The Lady Trojans were playing in the state semifinals at the same time as the prestigious track meet.
“I was disappointed but I didn’t want to miss softball. I knew we had a good chance at going to state this year,” she said. “I would love to go and just see where I am compared to bigger schools and see how good my jumps would be.”
