Southeastern Louisiana Wins 2020-21 Southland Men's All-Sports Trophy - Southeastern Lions Athletics

HAMMOND, La. – For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the Southeastern Louisiana claimed the Southland Conference Men's All-Sports Trophy for the 2020-21 athletic year, the league announced on Tuesday.

With 71.0 points in the men's all-sports standings, SLU edged Abilene Christian (70.5 points) and Sam Houston (69.0 points) to claim the honor.

The Men's and Women's All-Sports trophies are awarded annually for men's and women's competition based on a 13-point system for all conference sports, with the Commissioner's Cup being awarded to the program with the most combined all-sports points. Stephen F. Austin won both the Women's All-Sports Trophy and the overall
Commissioner's Cup for 2020-21.

Points are awarded from 13 to 1 according to place of finish in final conference standings in sports with regular seasons, or placement in conference championships for sports without regular seasons. If teams are tied in standings or placement, points for the given spots are distributed evenly. Points are awarded regardless of the number of teams that sponsor a given sport.

The most exciting spring in the history of Southeastern Athletics was also the program's most consistent across the board. With nine of SLU's 16 Division I sports finishing in the top five in the league, Southeastern finished fourth in the overall Commissioner's Cup standings – its highest-ever showing since joining the league prior to the 1997-98 year and the best showing of any institution that will remain in the Southland beyond 2020-21. The Lady Lions also finished fifth in the Women's All-Sports Trophy – also the best in school history.

"We knew this spring was going to be an unprecedented challenge with every sport playing in the same semester," Southeastern Director of Athletics Jay Artigues commented. "It was a challenge that our student-athletes, coaches and staff accepted and were excited to take on. Every in Lion Nation can take pride in the fact that we didn't just survive this spring, we thrived this spring."

Helping lead the way to the Men's All-Sports Trophy was the Southeastern cross country and track and field programs. Corey Mistretta's squads accounted for 37 points, as the cross country team won the first conference championship in school history, while both the men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams notched second-place showings in their respective championships. The Lion football team's second-place finish (12 points) and the third-place showing of the SLU baseball team (11 points) placed five of Southeastern's seven men's teams in the top three in their respective conference standings.

Four of Southeastern's women's programs finished in the top half of the Southland in 2020-21. The Lady Lion basketball team lead the way with its highest-ever finish, finishing second in the conference standings to garner 12 points. The indoor volleyball (T3rd, 10.5 points), soccer (5th, 9 points) and softball (T5th, 8.5 points) teams were the other top finishers. The SLU soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championships after winning the Southland Conference Tournament.
