Notable Multi-Sport Names At State Golf - Nebpreps

The four boys’ state golf tournaments got underway on Tuesday morning across the state.

There’s plenty of golf talent in each of the fields, but there’s also a strong multi-sport presence. Here are some names of state-qualifying golfers who fans of Nebraska prep sports may find familiar.

Class A
Sam and Charlie Hoiberg: The twins of Nebraska men’s head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg, both Sam and Charlie finished in the top 10 individually at the A-3 district meet at Holmes Golf Course. Charlie, the district meet champ, shot a 68 while Sam carded a 73. Sam and Charlie helped lead Lincoln Pius X to the Class A state basketball tournament. According to MaxPreps.com, Sam averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while Charlie averaged 10.6 points. Sam will be walking-on for his dad at Nebraska. After the first day of the state tournament, Charlie is tied for second overall with a 70 (-2) while Sam is tied for 35th with an 80 (+8).

Class B
Cam Binder, Auburn: Binder has won three state basketball championships during his time as an Auburn Bulldog. The Nebraska-Kearney basketball commit qualified for state golf after finishing eighth individually with a 78 at the B-1 district meet at Table Creek Golf Course. After Tuesday’s action, Binder is currently tied for 17th with an 82 (+10).

Barret Liebentritt, Omaha Skutt Catholic: The man is headed to Notre Dame to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team as a walk-on. He rushed for 604 yards and eight touchdowns last fall while leading the defense with 76 tackles. Liebentritt is tied for 17th with an 82 (+10).

Marley Jensen, York: Jensen may be undersized, but he’s been one of the Dukes’ leading tacklers the past couple seasons for head coach Glen Snodgrass’ football program. Jensen currently sits tied for 26th with an 85 (+13).

Issac Gart, Mount Michael Benedictine: Gart won the Class B No. 1 singles championship as a senior and junior, and took third as a sophomore and freshman. Gart is currently tied for 42nd with an 89 (+17).

Tyler Race, Pierce: Pierce won the Class C-1 state football championship last fall, and Race led the Bluejays in rushing with 1,018 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Race is tied for 48th with an 90 (+18).

Class C
Livia Hunke, West Point Guardian Angels Central Catholic: Hunke was a member of the Bluejays’ softball team that went 29-3 and won the Class C state championship last fall. Then in the winter, she played for the basketball team that made the C-2 state tournament last March. She placed ninth individually at the Fair Play Golf Course to earn a trip to state golf.
Hunke is tied for 20th with an 85 (+14).

Kobe Head, Fillmore Central: Head has been a tackle machine for Fillmore Central football over his prep career. Last season he led the Panthers with 74 stops, and has logged 294 over four seasons. Head shot a 78 to finish seventh individually at Crooked Creek Golf Club, where the C-1 district meet was played. Head is currently tied for 30th with an 89 (+18).

Kelen Meyer, Ord: He’s the Nebraska kicker recruit who, according to Huskers.com, made 110-of-116 career extra points (95 percent) and connected on 16-of-25 field goals. He showed off a strong leg with a 58-yard field goal as a senior that tied for the second-longest field goal in state history. Meyer fired a team-best 78 at the C-4 district meet at Indianhead Golf Course. Meyer is tied for 16th with an 84 (+13).

Alex Schademann, Fillmore Central: This kid’s a really good wrestler, too. He ended his sophomore year with a 40-7 record and a fifth-place finish at Class C 126 pounds at the state wrestling tournament. He shot a 72 at Crooked Creek to earn a district championship. Schademann is tied for third with a 76 (+5).

Brady Timm, Yutan: The Doane University basketball commit is one of the best prep ballers in the state. He came into this past C-2 state tournament averaging 21 points and 5.7 boards. H’s also a member of the golf team that qualified for state. Timm is tied for 39th with a 91 (+20).

Class D
Brendon Walker, Mullen: Walker, a Hastings College basketball and golf commit, was the D-5 district champ after shooting a 74 at Heritage Hills. He was also the basketball team’s point guard who averaged 12 points and three rebounds during its state-tournament-qualifying season. Walker currently leads Class D with a 70 (-2).

Barak Birch, Burwell: On the eight-man football field, Birch passed for 1,351 yards and 22 touchdowns while racking up over 1,600 total yards of offense for the Longhorns, who took runner-up in D-1 last fall. On the basketball court, he averaged 15 points, five rebounds and over four assists. Now’s he’s a state-qualifying golfer. Birch sits tied for 10th with an 82 (+10).

Dillon Critel, Burwell: The top golfer for the Longhorns was also one of the top basketball players. Critel shot a team-high 80 at the D-2 district meet and also averaged 12 points, four rebounds and three assists on the hardwood. Critel is tied for 23rd with an 88 (+16).

Quinn Johnson, Loomis: A straight-up bucket-getter on the basketball court, Johnson averaged 25 points and eight rebounds while shooting 42 percent from 3 this past season. Johnson shot a team-best 86 at the D-4 district meet at Hi-Line Country Club in Bertrand. Johnson is tied for 23rd with an 88 (+16).

Logan Wiedel, Thayer Central: Wiedel was the Titans’ quarterback who threw for 1,971 yards and 34 touchdowns while rushing for seven more. He shot a team-high 86 at the D-1 district meet at Indianhead, which was good for third overall individually. Wiedel is tied for 40th with a 92 (+20).

Alizae Mejia, Plainview: Mejia is an excellent wrestler in the winter. He won the 170-pound Class D state championship in 2020 and took third last February in the same weight class. Mejia is tied for 71st with a 105 (+33).
