DURHAM – Former Duke two-sport standout Don Altman, who earned All-ACC honors in both football and baseball, passed away on May 5 at his home in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 82.
Altman, a native of Freeport, Pa., quarterbacked the Blue Devils to a 7-6 win over Arkansas in the 1961 Cotton Bowl and, later that spring, was the starting pitcher in Duke's College World Series-opener versus Oklahoma State.
On the gridiron, Altman played two seasons (1959-60) under Hall of Fame head coach Bill Murray and helped the Blue Devils to a 12-9 overall record including the 1960 ACC championship. He started all 11 games in 1960 as Duke went 8-3 including the bowl game victory over the Razorbacks when Altman completed 12-of-15 passes for 83 yards and the game-winning, nine-yard touchdown toss to Tee Moorman with 2:45 remaining in the contest.
In 1960, Altman led the ACC in pass completion percentage (.654) and earned second team all-league honors. For his career, he was 87-of-134 (.649) passing for 766 yards and three touchdowns while recording four interceptions defensively.
As a two-year (1960-61) member of Duke's baseball team under head coach Ace Parker, Altman led the Blue Devils in pitching wins (8 in 1960; 6 in 1961) and earned run average (0.82 in 1960; 2.44 in 1961) both seasons and twice garnered All-ACC honors. For his career, he went 14-5 on the mound with a 1.60 earned run average while striking out 105 opposing batters in 168.2 innings. In 1961, the Blue Devils captured the ACC title, won the NCAA District 3 championship, and posted a 1-2 record in the College World Series.
