Jennifer Palmer owns the Sanford Sport Shop, located on West Saginaw Road, just west of the bridge in downtown Sanford. Palmer said, “We’ve got everything.” They sell hunting and fishing items, sporting goods, DNR licenses, beer, wine, cigarettes, and groceries. They also refill propane. The shop has five employees. The store was swamped in the flood. Palmer said the flood waters were just 12 inches from the ceiling. They lost everything. They partially reopened in late September and then were fully opened by February. Palmer’s a graduate of Beaverton High School and attended Great Lakes College. She has two daughters.
How long have you owned your business? It will be 20 years on Oct. 5.
What inspired you to own this business? I like it. Like the customers. They’re fabulous.
What makes Sanford a great place to own a business? Customers are loyal. It’s the customers pure and simple. That’s what keeps me here. I love my customers.
What are some ways your business is active in the local community? I give gift certificates to fundraisers, people in need. I sponsor outdoor items for contests, have donated to Ducks Unlimited, Whitetails Unlimited, and the Chamber.
What are some of your interests and hobbies? I like everything to do with the outdoors. I love to bike ride, kayak, and hunt. Hiking, too.
What are some local businesses that you work with that help make your business a success? Joe Gun, I send people to him, he sends people to me. Sanford Hardware, same thing.
Other thoughts? I just want to thank everybody who came together during and after the flood. All the people who made rebuilding possible, the volunteers, the construction companies, our customers. Want to thank Michelle Gotts at the spot where the people made rebuilding possible. Also, my employees. The whole community was fabulous.
