Golf may be her third sport, but it’s becoming Stephanie Ramos’ first love - MLive.com

BAY CITY, MI – When Stephanie Ramos was invited to join the golf team, she checked her calendar.

It was jam-packed with volleyball games, soccer games and, of course, school.

But Ramos can’t say no to competition.

For the fall season of her senior year at Bay City Central, Ramos decided to become a three-sport athlete and gave golf a try. One month into the campaign, she’s the top player on the Wolves roster.

“She does have some skills. I certainly wish we had her out here as a freshman,” Central golf coach Kurt Legner said. “Since she started practicing with us, she’s improved a lot. It’s pretty impressive. You can tell she’s a natural athlete.”

Ramos was rewarded for her gumption by winning the MLive Bay City Athlete of the Week poll. She garnered 9,679 votes, good for 53.7 percent of the 18,042 ballots cast. Pinconning golfer Tori Shark was runner-up with more than 5,000 votes while Bay City Western cross country runner Jeffrey Stecker drew more than 1,000 votes.

Ramos was already busy with travel soccer and preparing for volleyball season with the Wolves when her friend Jenna Ciesla invited her to play golf. But Ramos decided to squeeze the new sport into her schedule.

“Her schedule… I don’t know how the girl manages it, to tell the truth,” Legner said.

It didn’t take long for Ramos to get hooked on the game. She’s a big hitter off the tee and is quickly picking up the short game.

In the Saginaw Valley League jamboree at Sandy Ridge last week, she fired a career-low round of 47 to lead the Wolves.

“She’s constantly working on the game, with me and on her own time,” Legner said. “On the days we don’t have practice, she and Jenna will still go and play. She definitely has developed a love and appreciation for the game.”

While her future likely lies in soccer, where she is drawing college attention as a speedy and aggressive player, she is quickly showing promise on the golf course. Legner said she excitedly reported that she parred four consecutive holes by herself in a weekend scramble with her father.

“I enjoy the updates on how she is doing at the various courses she plays on the weekends,” Legner said. “She is hard on herself, which gives her the drive to get better.”

MLive player polls are non-scientific ventures, designed to promote fun, fandom and discussion. The winners receive no prize and the results have no bearing on postseason awards. Coaches are asked to nominate players for Athlete of the Week recognition by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com no later than noon Tuesday each week this fall season.
