FULL-TIME: The Sounders picked up a massive road win, jumping into first place in the Western Conference with a 2-1 win over Sporting KC on Sunday. The Sounders got goals from Cristian Roldan and Will Bruin and then withstood a Sporting KC comeback that included a Johnny Russell goal.
SPORTING KC 1, SOUNDERS 2: Following a free kick, Johnny Russell pounced on a loose ball and put through a couple defenders and past Stefan Frei to cut the deficit in half.
SPORTING KC 0, SOUNDERS 2: Raúl Ruidíaz intercepted an errant pass, worked his way around several defenders and then Will Bruin put away a loose ball to make it 2-0 in the 55th minute.
SPORTING KC 0, SOUNDERS 1: Cristian Roldan scored for the second straight game, putting away a Brad Smith cross in the 31st minute that send the Sounders into halftime with the lead. It was Roldan’s third goal in MLS play this season and his first since June 23. Roldan also nearly had an assist, but Raúl Ruidíaz hit an open header off a cross just wide.
LINEUPS: The Sounders are going back to the 3-5-2 for the first time in several months, rolling out a lineup that is essentially the same as the one they used in their first two games with the notable exception of Yeimar Gomez Andrade starting in place of Shane O’Neill.
The Seattle Sounders won’t have much time to get over the Leagues Cup hangover they are likely suffering from. Today’s match against Sporting KC is arguably the biggest of the regular season, as a Sounders win would catapult them back into first place in the Western Conference while a loss would leave them four points back.
This is the second meeting between the two teams this year, with Sporting KC scoring a 3-1 win at Lumen Field on July 25. A short-handed Sounders side was undone by several regrettable errors in that one.
The Sounders had come into that game 9-1-5, but have gone just 4-4-1 in the regular season since then and effectively fallen out of the Supporters’ Shield race. Still, the battle for the top seed in the Western Conference remains very much open.
- Although the Sounders hold a narrow 9-8-4 series advantage during regular-season play, Sporting KC has had the better of things recently. Since 2015, Sporting KC are 7-2-3 against the Sounders, including 4-0-2 at Children’s Mercy Park. The Sounders’ last win at Sporting KC was on May 8, 2013.
- This will be the Sounders’ fifth match in 15 days and the third of four straight road games.
- Daniel Salloi has been enjoying a MVP-caliber season with 13 goals and 6 assists so far.
- The Sounders have lost consecutive games for the second time this year. They’ve not lost three straight since 2019.
