Whitmer Loosens Sport Crowd Limits, Refuses to Discuss Director Resignation - 9 & 10 News - 9&10 News

For the first time in two weeks Governor Gretchen Whitmer held a press conference, with the media, to update the state on the COVID-19 fight.

Since then, the situation has gotten a bit worse.

COVID-19 cases are spiking across the state but Governor Whitmer is still relaxing some restrictions starting next week. Friday’s press conference was also the first time she spoke to the public since releasing the non-disclosure agreement with former MDHHS director Robert Gordon.Thumbnail Original

“We have to get vaccinated as soon as it’s available to you,” said Whitmer.

The number of COVID-19 cases are going up and Whitmer says most outbreaks stem from high school athletics, so part of her new order is to increase testing for youth sports. Athletes aged 13-19 must be tested before each practice and game.

At the same time, the order will increase spectator capacity.

“Outdoor stadiums can now go up to 20% capacity with certain COVID mitigation in place,” said Whitmer.

That’s good news for Detroit Tiger fans with Opening Day less than two weeks away.

Friday’s press conference had another hot topic, Gordon’s resignation. The two agreed to void a non-disclosure agreement to allow them to discuss the resignation. When asked directly about it on Friday, Whitmer still declined.

“I have said all I am going to say a Director Gordon’s departure,” said Whitmer, “We have to stay focused on the task at hand.”

The press and public are not the only ones that want an answer. Republicans in the legislature may have more power to get it.

“Dropping a disclosure agreement is one thing,” said Speaker of the House Jason Wentworth, “But actually coming forth and telling the people of Michigan what happened is very important.”

Wentworth did say that the House expects to go forward in filing subpoenas for maybe both Gordon and Whitmer to get some answers on the resignation.
