Greene Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Semifinalist - OSU Beavers

FAIRFAX, Va. - Oregon State gymnastics senior Lena Green has been named one of four semifinalists for the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education's Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. Two weeks ago, Greene was selected as a Top-10 Women's Finalist out of nearly 1,000 men's and women's nominees.
 
Greene is the first Beaver to be named a semi-finalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year award. 
 
In addition to being named a semifinalist, Greene was also selected as the Women's Gymnastics Individual Sport Category winner.
 
DIVERSE: Issues in Higher Education Release
 
Greene serves as a leader on and off the gym floor. Unable to compete for most of her final season, Greene has served an important role on the sideline as one of the leaders of hype.
 
In the classroom, Greene is on track to graduate from the Bioengineering program as a member of the National Society of Black Engineers.
 
A Tigard, Ore. native, Greene is an active member on campus and in the community.
 
The Events Chair in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she is also a member of the Sports Product Development Club on campus.
 
In the community, Greene is a frequent flyer with Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and the Human Services Resource Center Food Pantry. 
 
Combining her involvement with on-campus programs and off-campus community activities, Greene is a member of the Dam Worth It Events Committee to help bring awareness to mental health issues in collegiate athletics. 
 
Out of the four semi-finalists - Greene, Jessica Drop (Track/Cross Country, Georgia), Chanel Thomas (Soccer, Mississippi), and Mariah White (Basketball, Cleveland State) - one will be chosen as the 2021 Sports Scholar of the Year.
 
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, sports scholars are selected based on their athletic ability, academic performance, and commitment to community service and student leadership. 
 
Greene, along with the rest of her team, will compete next at the NCAA Athens Regional on Friday, April 2 at 10 am PT.
