Volleyball
The Sun Devils split the weekend series against Stanford (2-6) after Arizona State (5-11) won 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11) on Sunday. It was the first time since 1982 that volleyball won on the road at Stanford.
Stanford took the first set and Arizona State took control of the second set early. However, the Cardinal rallied to tie it at 24. The Sun Devils stuck with it to win the set and tie the series. Arizona State rode the momentum and took the third set.
The Cardinal responded with a dominant showing in the fourth set, forcing it to go the distance. That didn’t matter to the Sun Devils who jumped out to a five-point lead in the final set and used the start to seal the win.
Iman Isanovic led the Sun Devils with 21 kills, 15 more came from Roberta Rabelo. Ella Snyder took more of the setter role on Sunday instead of Shannon Shields as Snyder had 41 assists. Kennedi Boyd had a team-high five block.
The Sun Devils take their final road trip on March 26 and 28 for a pair of games at Colorado.
Water Polo
Fourth-ranked Arizona State (9-4, 3-1 Pac-12) completed the weekend of sweep of No. 17 San Jose State (1-5 0-2) with a 12-8 win.
Sunday’s contest was tight until the fourth period. Arizona State closed out the game scoring four goals from four different players in the final session. Eight Sun Devils had goals; Amira Van Buren, Bente Rogge, Ali Cameron and Alba Olive Marti all had two apiece.
The Sun Devils host Indiana for a two-game set on March 27-28.
Lacrosse
Arizona State lacrosse (5-2) used another first half to springboard to a win. The Sun Devils’ strong lead in to halftime propelled them past UC Davis (5-3) and onto a 19-14 victory.
The two teams were pretty even for much of the first half as Arizona State held on to a two-goal lead. A Katie Brodsky score at the 12:32 mark kickstarted a 4-0 run into halftime and the Sun Devils never let go of their lead after that.
UC Davis pulled within three at one point, but Berkeley Bonneau didn’t allow a goal in the final nine minutes of the contest.
Brodsky had a team-high four goals alongside Maddy Hunter, who matched her. Eight different Sun Devils scored against the Aggies.
Arizona State returns home to face Oregon on March 26.
Men’s Tennis
Arizona State (13-3) protected its home court on Sunday. The 19th-ranked Sun Devils were nearly flawless in the 4-1 win over Utah State (7-4).
Impressive double wins of 6-0 and 6-2 from Makey Rakotomalala/Tim Ruehl and Nathan Ponwith/George Stoupe pairings earned the doubles point. Rakotomalala only dropped one set in a 6-1, 6-0 sweep of Felipe Acosta on court two. Ruehl and Christian Lerby took their matches in three sets on courts one and three to secure the game-winning point.
Idaho State visits the Sun Devils on Wednesday, March 24.
