HS Sports Roundup: Farrell headed to CHSAA golf final, plus full sports slate on tap - SILive.com

Monsignor Farrell is headed to the CHSAA golf championship final after edging Fordham Prep, 3-2, in Wednesday’s semifinal.

The unbeaten Lions (10-0) were challenged by the Rams, but wins by Chris Vitale, Dean Mandia, and Mike Burke led the charge. Farrell will meet Iona Prep in the final, date TBA.

Vitale buried a clutch putt down the stretch of Wednesday’s match to cement the victory. The Lions improved to 43-7 overall as individuals.

“It was a big clutch putt by Chris Vitale with everything on the line that sealed us the victory after the wins by Burke and Mandia against a very strong Fordham team,” said coach Rich Scafuri. “We have one more to go until our ultimate goal.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Emily Schuler and Jessica Moukazis tallied two goals a piece and Macey Jones Busch and Sam Castellano each added scores to lead Tottenville over Curtis, 7-0. Andrea Rivera had two assists, while Francesca Mavricis, Kate Keane, Sabrina Ingenita and Joile Bonica held down the defense.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Susan Wagner picked up a 2-1 win over MSIT and played to a 1-1 draw against Curtis this past week.

Cristian Navarro and David Wozniak netted scores against Tech, while Samid Akanni scored the first and only goal for Wagner against Curtis.

Kelvin Yengbie evened the score for Curtis off an assist from Divine Cobbina.

BASEBALL

MSIT 10, PR 0

The Seagulls tallied five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Freshman starter Joseph Mattaliano was superb - firing a complete-game, six-inning shutout with eight strikeouts

Michael Passantino went 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs and Wyatt Tan went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Petrides 8, MSIT 6

SPT

Petrides players show off their custom American flag hats.

The Panthers, donning their custom American flag hats on Memorial Day Weekend, were led by sophomore slugger Derek Mendez. Mendez stroked a pair of homers and collected four RBI.

Rob Pacifici earned his second win of the year, going four strong innings. Joe Scarfone and Tommy Bruns added RBIs while Tom Loverdi picked up the save in relief. The Panthers improved to 4-2.

SOFTBALL

Susan Wagner 7, Curtis 0

Corinne DeMartini tossed a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and she also went 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs.

Julianna Raimonda went 1 for 2 with an RBI and Jessica Mills added a knock with 2 RBIs.

FLAG FOOTBALL

Tottenville 47, New Dorp 6

Julianna Dimarzio threw three touchdowns to Francesca Cusenza, Jenna Burgos, and Gianna Di Gregorio. Di Gregorio also threw a TD to Nicole Romano.

Amanda Andreano and Ava Lopacara both returned interceptions for touchdowns and Cusenza also added three sacks.

Susan Wagner 37, Port Richmond 0

Julia Catella completed 14 of 23 passes for 185 yards, three TDs and one extra point, while Juliana Laquinta added 48 yards on the ground and a score.

Olivia Rijo (50 receiving yards) hauled in a pair of scores, while Carly O’Brien reeled in a 35-yard TD strike.

Catella and Kaitlyn Matishek each returned interceptions for defensive scores. Jaice Dorsey and Moyin Erinfolami teamed for three sacks in the win.

“Catella did a great job of distributing the ball. She made wise choices with each pass and made sure that each of the receivers that played had a catch,” said coach Bashkim Pelinkovic. “Laquinta provided a jolt from the running back position and on the defensive side of the ball we have had great contribution from our freshmen Kaitlyn, Jaice and Moyin.”

TRACK AND FIELD

The Armory Foundation announced a record number of track & field meets for the Armory New Balance Track & Field Center with a record 117 meets scheduled during the upcoming 2021-2022 indoor season.

The energetic slate begins October 10 and November 7 with The Armory Trials that provide high school upperclassmen a chance to bolster their college recruiting profiles with official fully automatic time marks and concludes March 31-April 2 with the popular Columbia & NewYork-Presbyterian Indoor Marathon.

In-between, The Armory once again hosts premier track & field athletes from around the world – Olympians, professional, college, high school, and youth participants.
