The topic was supposed to be gaming. After all, Kyler Murray's inclusion on the upcoming cover of Sports Illustrated with the popular FaZe Clan -- of which Murray was recently "drafted" to be a part of the gaming/YouTube/Twitch group -- alone made it a big deal.
Sure, the Cardinals quarterback had once been a top 10 pick in the Major League Baseball draft before the Cards took him No. 1 in the NFL draft. Murray had to drop baseball to join the Cardinals, so now with the increasing popularity of gaming, maybe that's how Kyler sees his path to two-sport stardom -- football and Esports.
Or maybe not, because Murray couldn't help but talk how much he'd still love to give pro baseball a try in addition to gaming and his NFL job.
"I still hold on to the three-sport title," Murray said, chuckling a few times because he knows the hornet's nest he kicks every time he broaches the baseball subject. "If the time came where I got to do what I wanted to do, which, I don't know, but I'm leaving it open. I think I can still play for sure, but we'll add the gaming on to that. Don't shortchange me, please."
Murray's current NFL contract prohibits him playing baseball, so it's a moot point right now. But as cool as it is for him to be a part of FaZe Clan (a group he's followed and watched for years) and to be on the cover of SI (which is still important to him), baseball wasn't far from his mind.
"I know everybody around (the organization) probably feels different about it," Murray said in what is a dramatic understatement. "But me personally, I played the game my whole life. If I ever had the opportunity, for sure, I would definitely go for it. What are we talking about? I'm sure anyone asking me about it would (take that opportunity) too. I'm not trying to start anything. I'm just talking."
