Alabama cut down the nets Tuesday night to celebrate a title it technically clinched a few days earlier. It was significant since the Crimson Tide basketball team hadn’t won an SEC championship since 2002.
What it did against Auburn completed a feat even more uncommon.
The 70-58 win over the Tigers completed not only the men’s basketball season sweep but one that includes football and women’s basketball. The Crimson Tide took both women’s hoops games earlier this year and the Iron Bowl in Bryant-Denny Stadium to complete the circuit.
The last time that happened?
Try 1977-78. That’s 43 years.
It’s only the third time Alabama’s gone unbeaten against its intra-state archrival in those three sports. The other came a year before the last one in 1976-77 though it’s come close to sweeping in the years since.
The 2014-15 teams had a 4-1 record with one women’s basketball loss keeping it from ending that streak.
Auburn has one sweep in that span when winning all five meetings in the 2006-07 seasons.

This isn’t exactly a stat that’s kept in an official record book. It’s the result of some AL.com research of record books when Alabama got off to a big start to the 2020-21 seasons against Auburn.
The Tide is actually unbeaten against Auburn in seven head-to-head matchups in NCAA-sanctioned sports including gymnastics and women’s soccer. After connecting those dots, we wanted to see when the last time Alabama went undefeated against Auburn, so the two basketballs and football became the starting point.
Since the women’s hoops series officially began in 1974-75, that was the starting point.
Combining all three sports, Alabama has a 131-109 edge in head-to-head competition against Auburn since 1974. The Tide was 1-5 against the Tigers as recently as 2018-19 with a football win as the only barrier to an Auburn sweep after the Tigers took both men’s basketball games and three on the women’s side.
The chances are slim for another Alabama-Auburn meeting on the hardwood. The Tiger men’s team self-imposed a postseason ban so it will not be in Nashville for next week’s SEC tournament. The Tiger women have a 13-seed, making it highly unlikely it will meet the seventh-seeded Tide.
In terms of the overall Alabama-Auburn season series, the Tigers have a few upcoming opportunities to end the shutout. The women’s tennis teams meet on March 4 while the men play March 5. The softball teams play three games March 12-14 while the baseball series is April 15-17.
