Men’s Tennis

It was another nail-bitter for No. 21 Arizona State (11-1) but it kept the winning streak alive against No. 28 Oklahoma (6-5) on Friday. Nathan Ponwith had all the weight on his shoulders to secure the final point in the 4-3 win after her battled to the end against Oklahoma’s Jake Van Emburgh. Ponwith swept the match, but earned it after 7-6, 7-5 wins.

Arizona State swept the doubles point after wins from Ponwith/George Stoupe and Christian Lerby/Andrea Bolla. Lerby took his match after three sets and Bolla swept Mark Mandlik with ease.

The Sun Devils cap off their road trip with their toughest test yet. On Sunday, they’ll face second-ranked Baylor.

Women’s Tennis

No. 24 Arizona State (7-3, 1-0 Pac-12) bounced back on Friday to earn its first conference win. The Sun Devil swept the Oregon Ducks (6-2, 0-1) 4-0 in Tempe.

The doubles point was hard earned for the Sun Devils. Sammi Hampton and Marianna Argyrokastriti won their match on court three, but after Giulia Morlet and Domenika Turkovic fell on court two, it was up to Ilza Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptiste to pull through. The pair did as they defeated Oregon’s Uxia Martinez Moral and Rifanty Kahfiani 7-6.

Turkovic took her singles match first following two 6-1 victories. Cali Jankowski played the singles instead of Hampton and earned a sweep as well. Argyrokastriti clinched the win after a dominant performance as well.

Arizona State travels to the Pacific Northwest next weekend to face Washington State and Washington on March 12 and 14.

Cross Country

The Pac-12 Cross Country championships took place in Washington on Friday.

On the men’s 8K run, Arizona State’s best finish came from Vincent Mauri’s 23:35.3 to grab 22nd place. No other Sun Devil placed inside the top 50.

The Lady Devils finished overall in ninth place in the 6K run. Megan Reniewicki placed 36th after a 20:53.70 time. Behind her was sophomores Ava Shackell in 48th and Lena Lebrun in 51st.

Volleyball

The trip to Tucson did not fair well for Arizona State volleyball (1-10) against Arizona (5-8) on Friday. The Wildcats took three straight tight games to earn the 3-0 sweep (19-25, 19-25, 20-25).

Six points was the most that separated the two teams in any of the games. The first set was neck-in-neck until about the 10-point mark. That’s when Arizona started to create a lead after a handful of kills from Wildcat Merle Weidt. The Wildcats used a 6-0 run to sustain a lead in the second set that they rode after the game was tied at 14. Arizona State pulled the third set to a 18-19 deficit before once again a Wildcat run pushed them to victory.

The two teams play again in Sunday but in Tempe.
