Insight from Sydney Lusher, a three-sport All-CNY player (5 questions) - syracuse.com

Oneida’s Sydney Lusher is one of those rare athletes to earn All-CNY first-team status in three sports. Just recently, she entered the syracuse.com | The Post-Standard 1,000-point club. Here are the answers to her five questions.

Q. You’ve joined the 1,000-point club in girls basketball – as a three-sport All-CNY player, what honor would you like the opportunity to achieve in tennis and softball?

Sydney: I’m happy to join that club. I was pulled up to varsity when I was an eighth-grader, so that created the opportunity to work toward 1,000 points. With tennis, I’d just be happy to have a season! Some Oneida players have had 100 wins, so that might be something I’d like to do. For softball, definitely make it to the state championships again and win.

Q. Which of the three is your favorite sport (basketball, tennis or softball)?

Sydney: Basketball! I’ve always had a basketball in my hands. I love dribbling and passing the ball more than shooting. What I like about being on the court is the sense of team motivation. But for me, I’m focused – like nothing else is going on. It’s just me and the game. I’m going to Le Moyne College because I wanted to join a team that would offer a great experience like mine in high school. I also wanted to stay close to my family – I love spending time with them. Plus, being close to home, I can get back to Oneida to see some of my former basketball teammates play.

Q. What advice can you offer other two- or three-sport athletes to keep themselves motivated, strong and energetic?

Sydney: Love what you do! Whether it’s sports or the arts or music. Find enjoyment. I played trombone when I was younger and that definitely wasn’t for me.

Q. How has the Covid pandemic affected your sporting goals, and who on your basketball team keeps you upbeat and moving forward?

Sydney: Covid changed everything about the season. There’s no championship play, so I’m definitely enjoying the few games we do get to play. My teammates, Maddy (Carroll), Naomie (Pawlikowski) and Kaylin (Curro) keep practices and the games fun. They make me laugh while being competitive.

Q. What’s the coolest thing about you as a student-athlete that you’d like our readers to know?

Sydney: I’m really a fan of store-bought chocolate milk. The flavor is awesome and it’s filling when I don’t know what I want to eat. I’m also a person who likes to show, not tell, when proving myself. It’s good to work hard.
