Bronco Sport vs. RAV4: Rugged Individuals

Ford Bronco Sport

Rugged and outdoorsy, the new Ford Bronco Sport successfully channels the spirit of the larger Bronco into a compact package. Slightly smaller than the Escape, the Bronco Sport has a utilitarian design. The cabin’s upright seating houses four adults, although rear knee clearance is tight and door openings are narrow. A stepped-up roofline makes for a tall cargo bay that can accept a pair of mountain bikes. The cabin has a fair bit of hard plastic but is more notable for features like the rubberized load floor, seatback zippered pouches, liftgate-mounted spotlights, and easy-clean vinyl flooring with carpet mats.

Base, Big Bend, Outer Banks, Badlands, and First Edition grades are offered. All include AWD with terrain modes (called Goes Over Any Terrain or G.O.A.T. modes). The Badlands and First Edition have additional G.O.A.T. modes and enhanced capability with an off-road suspension, hill-descent control, a differential lock, and a forward-facing 180-degree-view camera, which helps in tricky terrain. They also have a 250-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine, while lesser trims get a 1.5-liter turbo 3-cylinder with 181 horsepower. Fuel economy is not great, though, at 23 mpg for the larger engine and 26 mpg for the base unit. Standard active-safety features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with lane-centering is optional.

Toyota RAV4

Variety is the watchword with the Toyota RAV4. The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 203 horsepower, though engine refinement is lacking, and is paired with an 8-speed automatic and FWD or AWD. The AWD system in the Adventure and TRD Off-Road models has selectable off-road driving modes and hill-descent control. EPA combined fuel economy is 30 mpg (FWD) and 28–30 mpg (AWD). The 219-hp RAV4 Hybrid is AWD and impresses with an EPA combined rating of 40 mpg. The new-for-2021 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid makes a whopping 302 horsepower and hustled to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. It also can travel 42 miles on battery power alone, which is more than most PHEVs.

The expressive exterior design carries through to the interior, although there are some cheap materials on lower trims. Headroom is tight but passenger space is otherwise good, and cargo space is mid-pack. All RAV4s come with forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane centering, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are options on the base trim and standard elsewhere. The infotainment uses 7-, 8-, or 9-inch touchscreens, depending on trim, and smartphone mirroring is standard. A head-up display, a 360-degree-view camera, and a rear camera mirror can be had on upper trims, but only synthetic leather is available.

Similarities

Standard active-safety features; off-road capability; seating for five.

2021 Ford Bronco Sport Advantages

Standard AWD; rugged styling; versatile interior.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Advantages

High-mpg Hybrid available; plug-in-hybrid Prime model; more cargo space; greater towing capacity; proven reliability.

Final Recommendation

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport pinpoints the adventure-ready slice of the market and hits a bullseye. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 in its TRD Off-Road and Adventure trims has some of the same capability, but it also has more mainstream models plus Hybrid and PHEV variants. Add its proven reliability, and the RAV4 is the better choice for most buyers.
