NEW LOTHROP, MI – Had he wanted, Cam Orr of New Lothrop probably could have had his choice of three sports to play in college.
He received several offers to play baseball, is a state champion wrestler and led New Lothrop to the Division 7 state football championship last month.
But when it came down to it, football is Orr’s favorite sport and that’s why he signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend Ferris State, where he will play either linebacker or defensive end. He was a first-team All-State defensive end as well as the Flint-area Defensive Player of the Year last season.
“The culture they build there is unprecedented,” said the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Orr. “Their coach is the best coach in the country, all divisions. He has the winningest record. Being on campus felt like home to me.”
Indeed, Ferris coach Tony Annese has posted record of 87-16 since being hired at Ferris in 2012 and his winning percentage of .845 is the best in the country for schools Division II and up. That’s better than the likes of Alabama’s Nick Saban.
Annese is no stranger to Flint-area players. He coached at Montrose during his high school days and Orr has Montrose ties. His mother attended Montrose and her brothers – the Severns of wrestling fame – won a combined 10 state championships on the mat for the Rams.
“My mom was a student teacher for him … and his dad coached my grandpa,” Orr said.
Orr said he had multiple offers to play baseball – he’s a pitcher, catcher and first baseman – and had one offer to wrestle, although he was expecting more before announcing his commitment to Ferris.
He was the quarterback on the Hornets’ state championship team and had an 12-0 record as New Lothrop’s starter but he enjoys playing on the defensive side. That said, he’s open to playing where ever he can get on the field.
“I’m going to Ferris (with) one goal, to be a defensive lineman and linebacker,” Orr said. “But who knows, maybe the opportunity will come to play quarterback. They run a similar offense to ours.
“I’m always open to opportunity but what they want me to play right now is defensive line and linebacker.”
Brooke Wenzlick of New Lothrop’s girls basketball team also signed her letter of intent to play for Trine University, which is located in Angola, Ind., just over the Michigan border.
She is a four-year starter who made honorable mention All-State in Division 3 last season.
Wenzlick averaged 18.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 steals last season. As a sophomore, she helped the Hornets win a district title before finishing with an 18-5 record.
She chose Trine over Concorida-Ann Arbor, Alma College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
“The campus is phenomenal, the academics are really top-notch and the coaching is awesome as well,” said Wenzlick, who plans to major in biology with an eye on going into the medical field.
Like all winter sports athletes, Wenzlick is eagerly awaiting word from the state the she can get back on the court for her senior season.
New Lothrop should have a strong team with four seniors and two juniors returning from last year’s 11-11 team.
“I’m trying to stay optimistic but they keep pushing us back,” she said. “The whole team as well as me are itching to get back on the court. We practice hard every day. We’re ready for the opportunity if we get it.
“We’re definitely have a lot of potential. We just need to prove ourselves when we get on the court.”
