New winter sport debuts in River Prairie - WQOW TV News 18

ALTOONA (WQOW) - A new winter sport that's made its debut in Canada is hoping to gain some popularity in Altoona.

Crokicurl is a combination of curling and crokinole, a Canadian board game where players flick chips toward different scoring regions on a board. Basically, the sport is played just like the board game but on a large sheet of ice and uses curling stones instead of chips.

The rink located in River Prairie is the first crokicurl court in the United States.

Altoona City Administrator Mike Golat said it took almost three weeks to prepare the 42-foot rink.

"We hope that it catches on," Golat said. "Much like Eau Claire is the epicenter of kubb, we hope to build a crokicurl culture here, and maybe get other people to put in different rinks, or maybe we can have more than one rink next year."

If you want to learn to play, a pop-up event is happening until 8 p.m. in River Prairie, then on Feb. 17, Golat said there will be a crokicurl tournament for people 16 and older.
